Dixon – Virginia E Smith of Dixon died Tuesday, June 19, 2018 following a short illness at Franklin Grove Living and Rehabilitation Center.
Virginia was born Aug. 13, 1924 in Sterling to Arthur and Verna (Beede) Dodd. She married Harry J. Smith on June 28, 1946 at the First United Methodist Church in Dixon. Virginia lived most of her life in Dixon attending Loveland Grade School and was the valedictorian for her Dixon High School class of 1942. Virginia worked at the Green River Ordinance Plant during WW II. She attended the University of Illinois and the University of Iowa becoming a registered Physical Therapist and lifetime member of the American Physical Therapy Association. She worked for one year in Rockford for the National Foundation (March of Dimes) during the polio epidemic and then later for 23 years as Director of the Physical Therapy Department at KSB Hospital retiring in 1987. She enjoyed vacation traveling, fishing and playing cards with her husband and friends. Later enjoyed TV sports, sitting on the porch, reading, and working crossword puzzles.
Survivors include her husband, Harry of Dixon; 2 sons Gary (Judi) Smith of Kirkwood, Missouri and Larry (Betsy) Smith of Crystal Lake, Illinois; a daughter Peggy Smith of Fort Worth, Texas; and 6 granddaughters, 5 great-granddaughters and 5 great-grandsons. She is also survived by her sister, Sandra (Bob) Vermillion of Charlotte, North Carolina and a niece and nephew.
Cremation rites have been accorded. A private graveside service will be scheduled for a later date at Chapel Hill Memorial Park of Dixon.
