Lloyd Swan, a World War II Veteran and retired Mathematics teacher at Dixon High School, has died. He was 93.
Mr. Swan died Monday (June 22, 2015) at 6:55 AM in hospice care at Liberty Court in Dixon.
He served in the Army in World War II from 1942-1945 with the First Cavalry Division in the Pacific Theatre. He achieved the rank of First Sergeant and was awarded the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star and the Combat Infantry Medal.
A member of the IEA and NEA Educational Associations, he received his Master’s Degree from the University of Illinois. A teacher for two years in Kansas, Illinois, he and his wife, Jody, then moved to Dixon, where he enjoyed teaching Mathematics at Dixon High School for 35 years, retiring in 1983. He also coached football, basketball and track at DHS.
From 1952 to 1976, he was the Superintendent of the Dixon Park District and was manager and operator of the Dixon Memorial Pool during that time.
He was a member of the First Methodist Church in Dixon. A lifelong sports fan, Mr. Swan and Jody rooted for the football and basketball teams for the University of Illinois, the Chicago Bears and most ardently for the Chicago Cubs.
He was married to Jody for 58 years, until her death in 2007. Also preceding him in death were his parents, three sisters, two brothers and his daughter, Nancy Swan who died of ALS in 2011.
Survivors include a daughter, Gale Donnelly in Titusville, FL; a son, Scott Swan in Laguna Niguel, California and three grandchildren Joe Lee in Milledgeville, Illinois, Rachel Donnelly, in Bethel Connecticut and Erin Donnelly in Washington D.C.
Respecting Mr. Swan’s wishes, the funeral will be private with immediate family members only.
A memorial reception will be held from 4-6 PM Friday at the Dixon V.F.W.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Dixon High School Athletic Department, care of Karen Price, 300 Lincoln Statue Dr., Dixon, IL 61021.
