Vicki and Becky, We were so saddened to hear of your Mother's passing. I had tried calling her in the past months but hadn't been successful in reaching her. I guess I got so used to her being on the go, that I figured she was out and about. Two nights ago, Mark and I were walking down the road and were surprised to see a beautiful pink rosebud left standing in the farm field east of the house. We suspected something had happened---we don't take the paper or we would have come to the service.
I was so glad when Wanda took me up on my invitation to come out to the house after we moved in. Mark and I wanted to know more about the history of the house, and she told me lots of good stories. Another time I visited her at her home and she found some photos of the house being built, a couple of aerial views of the farm, and a nice photo of her parents. Those were treasures to us! I took had my scanner with me and made copies that we had framed and put in the stairwell. My favorite story that she told me was when she was a very little girl, she was out in the side yard while the kids at the Bell School (that used to be across the street) were having their yearly photo taken. She was watching them through the bushes. Someone spotted her and invited her to come over and be in the picture, so she did! I keep holding out hope that maybe someday I will cross paths with a copy of that photo!
Except in this past year we talked by phone a few times each year, especially around both of our birthdays in July. We would joke that she would call for my birthday (the 5th) and then I'd say, "talk to you in a couple of weeks!" I liked telling her what all was growing in our vegetable garden and orchards. One spring I took her a bundle of asparagus. I liked sitting in her kitchen and just chit chatting. She was so kind to always ask about our dogs. I am very grateful to have had the chance to know her. Her positive attitude was contagious and so many times she helped me get through a rough patch. I am sorry to know that she won't be sharing any more stories about the farm, but if you or any other family members would like to share stories or photos (especially of the croquet court she told me about), I would greatly appreciate that and would put them in my House History book in her memory. I am glad to have met you, Vicki, and enjoyed your visit and stories about Velma. We will continue to preserve the homestead even if it's only 3 acres, and will reflect on all the happy memories that have taken place on this land. Maybe some evening I will catch a glimpse of a little girl in my front garden, looking over toward the old school yard..... Take care and we wish you comfort and peace. Sincerely, Lisa Braddock and Mark Straka

We are thinking of all of you and wish we could be there to offer our love and support in-person. Great Aunt Wanda was a wonderful person. I will remember her generous spirit and all of the greeting cards that she sent me through the years for my birthday, holidays, and when I was sick. I have only happy memories of Aunt Wanda and I am comforted that she is now in a better place!
Love~ Lisa (for Charles, too)
